A Time to Gather: Happy Thanksgiving from Corner Cartel

The full glory of autumn has finally arrived and for those of us here in the south, it’s time to face the reality of summer’s end and begin embracing the fade of our gardens, falling leaves, and cooler temps. Autumn always feels like possibility, but this year that feeling of hope is a little more special. Maybe it’s because we’re gathering again; with our friends, our neighbors, and most important of all, our family.

The past year brought an unwelcome and often painful distance to some of our closest relationships. Now some are gathering after long absences, while others are simply looking forward to celebrating the nearness of those they love. So many of us spent last year’s holiday season far apart from our favorite people, so this year’s Thanksgiving feast carries a deeper meaning of thankfulness—both for what and who we have in our lives. Of course gathering together means eating together and eating together means a table decorated suitably for that amazing pumpkin pie!

Decorating for fall is all about bringing the outside in with pumpkins and other colorful gourds, prickly pine cones, and dried leaves in vibrant oranges, reds and even cozy browns. Come to think of it, autumn and the Thanksgiving holiday is all about coziness. Whether you prefer coffee, tea, or hot apple cider, nothing compares to wrapping your hands around a warm mug and inhaling the steam—especially when there’s a genuine chill in the air. And don’t forget the candles! Even unscented tapers bring a beautiful glow to a table, especially now that it’s dark before dinner.

Of course, décor should be fun, so it’s especially important not to overthink it or feel overwhelmed. Some years our most beautiful decorations have come from souvenirs found after a long walk on the nature trail. Nature’s beauty is simple, so enjoy decorating with items that evoke a warm cozy feel or spark a sweet childhood memory.
