One of my favorite things about retail is going to market to purchase inventory with which to stock the shelves. There’s an excitement in the atmosphere that’s likely a result of a combination of things: the anticipation of the changing seasons, the upcoming holidays, and simply in exploring all that’s new with regards to the ever-changing trends in the industry.

So, after a year and a half of most major markets being canceled, it was so good to be back with shoppers from all over the United States this June. The showrooms were crowded with buyers and most business owners were very positive about the upcoming holiday season. However, several times we were advised by wholesalers to order from as many different suppliers as we could, as many Chinese and Indian ports are continuing to operate at lower capacity due to the lingering effects of the pandemic.

But, that’s for folks like me to be concerned with, not you! So, here's a recap of the trends and products we saw on this summer’s Dallas Market journey:

Light woods, natural fabrics and botanicals

There's no better way to change up the feel of your home than to update with a few new pieces. It doesn't have to be an entire overhaul, but consider adding a new natural wood side table, a soft cotton throw on the sofa, new flowy curtains, a beautiful botanical print, or a few potted plants.

Funky finds

I love that fun and funky accents are beginning to take center-stage, inspiring us all to be bold and courageous in adding a bit of whimsy and personality to our spaces. Gone are the days of worrying about how others will perceive our eclectic collections of things we love: the more personal and unique, the better!

Stay cozy

For many people, after more than a year of working from home, cozy clothing is a priority. For me, anything comfy and cozy that I can wear inside, but also wear to the grocery store is a winner!

Western style

If you know, you know. But, if you're new to Texas, get ready for western-wear and home style to become a way of life. Cow hide rugs, leather accents and accessories, silver and turquoise jewelry, oversized belt buckles, and of course hats and boots!

Gold, gold, gold

Us retailers are already thinking about Christmas, as we must order our holiday items now to have them on the shelves for you this winter. And after this trip, we are convinced that the colors of choice for this holiday season are gold, gold, and more gold! Traditional, vintage, or new…all will be abundant this shopping season and all will be sure to make your home shine.

Gift exchange items

Bunco group? Gift swap at work? Wine and smoked sausage will forever hold their place in the social gift-giving world, but this year think: insulated mugs and water bottles in tons of colors and designs (or even personalized!), baseball caps, and quirky (super soft) graphic tees.

Can I say again how wonderful it was to see a bit of normalcy return at Dallas Market? However, all is not as it was just yet. The key take-away from the trip was this: If you see something you love, buy it! Due to the still-present shipping and receiving struggles I mentioned before, there's a good chance that retailers will not be able to re-order and replace merchandise as it sells out.

Also, please support your local small businesses—they have banded together to weather the storm, despite the odds. Watch for new arrivals at all of your local Boerne boutiques and shops; our Main Street truly is the heart of our wonderful hometown!

And remember this: While we are all still in a very different season of life and a lot has changed, hope and heart remain.
